The craft fair surprised him. After noticing the few signs they had
passed—no need to stop and ask for directions—Gibb had thought there would maybe
a few stalls dotted about, a burger van and someone selling second hand tat.
Instead there were rows of vendors, everything was neat and tidy, and each row
was even signposted to shop te type of stuff sold. The sign saying ‘everything
and anything’ made him laugh. Wasn’t that was it was all about.
‘I want to see if I can get some old lace doilies,’ Lottie said.
‘I’ve got an idea for a table cloth.’
‘Do people still use them?’ Gibb asked as they headed down the row
marked lacework.
Lottie glanced up at him. ‘Which?’
‘Either or.’
‘Oh yes. A perfect tablecloth can set off a room. I remember years ago
seeing a decorative cloth made up of antique lace doilies and it would be
perfect to use in the shop. I’ve got that all singing all dancing sewing
machine, I might as well try it out on something creative. Put some pretty
china on it and evoke old fashioned memories of afternoon teas and so on.’
‘Why not. My mum does quilting. What?’
Lottie made a weird noise between a gasp and a cough.
‘I do have a mum. She lives in Scotland.’
‘Er dare I ask what she
thinks of your career path?’

I have a crochet tablecloth that I take to book signings. Ton of work, but really beautiful in the end.
